The Greek philosopher, Plato 2400 years ago denounced democracy as leading to tyranny and anarchy.
This thought has been proven correct in the state of Pakistan, where a succession of rulers like Bhutto, Nawaz, Zardari exercised tyranny at the top and used anarchy at the bottom to spread fear amongst the establishment enabling the leaders to further their exercise of tyranny.
Nawaz Sharif showed in his attacks on the Supreme Court by a mob forcing them to flee for their lives proving that Plato was right in his blaming democracy for the exercise of tyranny.
The state has suffered a subsequent break down in law and order.
Plato has realised that the limitless use of democracy would lead to anarchy and eventually tyranny.
The only safeguards to protect against the slide of democracy into the tyranny would be a strong judiciary.
Nawaz Sharif proved that the control of the judiciary would be essential for control of the people.
The other institutions could be easily brought under the rulers as the judiciary is the final arbiter between right and wrong and had the monopoly on deciding the guilt of the wrongdoer.
Simply put, the judiciary was enabled to decide the guilty and punish accordingly.
Thus the behavioural pattern was established and used by Nawaz Sharif and company.
With the judiciary firmly in Nawaz Sharif’s control built for his people and for Nawaz Sharif himself is enough proof of the “N Bias” still in use.
His escape to London while serving a sentence is a clear example of the judicial bias.
More dangerous is the signal sent out which alludes to his innocence and undermines the working of the court itself.
A classic case of institutional suicide.
We witness the behaviour of the MNAs as rabble of Plato’s days not allowed into the senate where behaviour was strictly moderated unlike the behaviour witnessed in our assembly.
In European days the German democracy was stopped by wars with an extremely high mortality.
However the one vote principle had established Hitler’s control of the Germans creating his fascist state which led to a world war before this democracy could be overturned.
Democracy at its most extreme.
This experiment of democracy in Pakistan has been very expensive in economic terms.
Invariably, the democratic principle has been used by the Bhuttos and Sharifs to perpetuate their power while milking the economy for huge amounts which are stolen at the command of the leadership.
Plato had identified the weakness of the democratic system and we over 2 millennia later as Pakistanis have to suffer the validity of his theorems.
Plato had suggested the ideal ruler would be a benevolent King.
However, Pakistanis are trapped with a benevolent Prime Minister minister emasculated by an errant judiciary under N’s control.
The only way to break this impasse would be a martial law with the accompanying consequences.
The present conditions of anarchy may lead to this eventuality.
So obviously a calamitous end to the experiment of democracy.
How’s this experiment worth the cost in economic terms?
When the enemy facing the country is abject poverty surely the democratic experiment has taught the poor people of Pakistan a lesson in poverty.
Certainly not when the rulers are seen in luxurious surroundings abroad when the ruled wallow in hunger, filth and disease.
The democratic leadership of Bhuttos, Zardaris and Sharifs should be put on trial for their misuse of the experiment of democracy.
This sub human existence should not be the so called fruits of democracy.
Another example of a near brush of collapse was shown by Trump in his last days of how anarchy almost broke down the American system.
