The Dog That Did Not Bark
Published on August 08th 2015

There is a famous Shaerlock Holmes story of the same name, in which a particular crime was committed, but Sherlock Holmes noticed that the dog of the house did not bark, and so Holmes deduced brilliantly that this clue showed clearly that the dog knew the criminal and therefore it was someone belonging to the house. Ergo the crime was solved. Similarly.
The speech by Altaf has created a huge stir, and the four Chief ministers have expressed their outrage. All the politicians have made similar statements. Except for the Prime Minister. This is alarming, for it may show that Nawaz may be agreeing with the substance of Altafs statement. This is very dangerous, because it goes against the wishes of the Provinces, a including his brother the Chief Minister of Punjab whose statement is the most strident. With Nawaz abstaining from the fray will send some confused signals Nationwide.

Does the PM agree with the statement of Altaf, in which case he can be considered anti Pakistan? Or by not issuing a statement he is undermining the line taken by his Chief Ministers, which could lead to his isolation. Much worse, in not issuing a statement, the Head of the Government will be seen by the Governments of the world especially the UK government as not being serious about pursuing the many criminal acts such as inciting hatred, supporting terror in Pakistan. This will in turn affect the cases pending in the UK courts. Where Altaf is under investigation on many counts, including murder. The UK government will infer that the Minister Interior is also not to be taken seriously in his requests for the investigations against Altaf.
These are the serious inferences that can be drawn from the PMs silence. It shows the Government is not interested in the speech given by Altaf, and –God forbid may even be agreeing to some of the points raised by Altaf. If so, the PM could face censure within the house, if not charges of treason. The PM will have to make a strong statement today, or these questions may be raised.

Nawaz Sharif should realize that he is the Head of the Government, and must act against any such acts. The UK government must be summoned by our FO and told in no uncertain terms that a citizen of the UK who has been granted asylum, and citizenship does not have the licence to Speak against Pakistan or its Armed forces, or incite hatred towards its people or its government. Nawaz as PM cannot be allowed to let his lackadaisical style of governance carry over into his foreign policy, and must understand that in the foreign affairs, a single comma can defeat the meaning of an entire treaty let alone a meaningful silence. This could be construed by the UK government to give the Sherlock Holmes story relevance, which would effect the position of Pakistan, adversely. Nawaz Sharif must be woken up from his somnambulance and told that being Prime Minister carries with it some serious responsibilities, amongst which are the need to stay awake and attend office in Pakistan.

The case of the speech by Altaf must be acted upon by the PM himself, or there will be calls for his resignation by people other than Imran Khan. Nawaz Sahrif must learn that being Prime Minister is not just about long lunches and lassi. The affairs of state take precedence over leisurely meals. At the moment the time is not his own, and he is a servant of the state with responsibilities that are important to the state and the people. In school one was punished for being lazy, in life it is much more serious, and the punishment more painful.
Mr. Prime Minister you have a job please get on with it.
